What is Reverse Osmosis (RO)?

To understand Reverse Osmosis, let’s first examine the concept of osmosis. Osmosis is the natural process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane. They naturally move from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one. Thus the process equalizes the concentrations on either side of the membrane.

With plants, special cell walls act as the membrane through which water passes, bringing with it the nutrients that feed the plant.

In water purification, a synthetic membrane separates water with a high concentration of contaminants from water with a low concentration. Reverse osmosis forces the water with the high concentration through the membrane to the other side using normal water pressure. Only molecules of water can easily pass through that membrane; so the water emerges on the other side purified. This leaves the impurities behind and rinses them down a waste drain.
